Fun-Filled, Successful Gala Evening
On Saturday ,
February 9th we held our annual fund-raising gala evening. Breaking with “tradition” we all met at the
Knighton Hotel instead of the Community Hall.
We also engaged a new band for our entertainment – The Four just Men – and
everyone agreed that they entertained us well.
The evening started off with
a cheque being presented to the Mayor of Knighton for £375.00. He received it from President Tony on behalf
of Knighton Community Support Group.
The money was part of that raised by our bucket-shake just before
Christmas.
After Kim, as
Master of Ceremonies, welcomed our visitors from neighbouring clubs, the Mayor
& Mayoress, District Governor Roy Blacker, Past and present members of the
club and all our friends, Tony was delighted to call upon Richard Morgan to
join him. Richard is the Founder
President of the Rotary Club of Knighton & District. In 1976-77, almost single-handedly, Richard
recruited 22 prominent members of Knighton to join that club. Taking on many roles Richard remained a
valued member until just a few months ago when, sadly, he decided it was time
to retire. We shall all miss his poetic
talents and mellifluous voice.
After paying tribute to
Richard’s achievements Tony presented him with an engraved crystal tankard as a
small token of our respect and gratitude.
Richard then addressed the assembled party.
We were
delighted that Jen Blacker was sufficiently recovered from her illness to
enable Roy to join us. Roy had composed
a poem as a tribute to the club. It
goes like this:
What can I say about
Knighton Club?
Excellent company and very good grub

They have many
nationalities including an Aussie
But I have been told
she can be rather bossy!
Older members of other
clubs start to get moanie
When they have an
invite from “no-tie” Tony
And I must admit I
have never seen better
Than Jean’s monthly
edition of the club newsletter.
But although they
enjoy their food and the fun
There’s a great deal
of work that they have done.
Each month they take a
car and park it
And sell bacon &
coffee at the Farmer’s market.
They raise lots of
money for our charity Foundation
That helps millions of
people from every nation.
Through the community
they support many a cause
And from the people
they deserve great applause.
But tonight Air
Ambulance and Hope House will gain
For Service above Self
is the Knighton club refrain
They show that in this
club they are prepared to share
Their time and
expertise for those who need care
And, for all those who
benefit, your praises we sing
For you really are
ordinary people
Achieving
extraordinary things.
(Jen is now home from hospital but still weak. She sends thanks to our club for the flowers
Tony sent on our behalf.)
After our dinner the Four Just Men entertained us cabaret style and,
after a short break in which the raffle was drawn, they metamorphosed into a
dance band. They were so good that even
two of Wigmore’s “non-dancing” men graced the floor. At midnight there were still plenty of people dancing as the band
drew the evening to a close.
The gala was well supported. Altogether, including the
raffle, the net proceeds were £595.32
Many thanks
are due to all the members for their brilliant efforts in selling event and
raffle tickets and those who helped decorate the room. Special thanks also to Kim, Adam, Ivan and
Tony who organised the whole event.
If you missed out on the fun this year why not put a reminder in your
diary to join in next year?
Supporting Cancer
Treatment Locally
As a result
of our fund raising just before Christmas we were able to present a cheque for
£430 to The Macmillan Renton Unit which
is situated at Hereford Hospital The
new unit will be able to deliver 98% of the chemotherapy needed by local
people. It is hoped that, in the
not-too-distant future radio therapy will also be available. Space has been made available for the 2
scanners which will be needed.
We were pleased to welcome
Mr Peter Rowland, (an ex-Rotarian), County Organiser of the Macmillan Cancer
Support group to receive the cheque on February 6th. He told us that so far they have raised £1.5
million pounds mainly from donations like our’s.
Di trains teachers in
Uganda
Kim
introduced the club to Di Slater on Wednesday evening, February 6th. Di is a neighbour of Kim having recently
moved into Chapel Lawn from Birmingham where she was a Headteacher of an Infant
School and Nursery.
Kim, Di Slater and Tony
In 2003 Di was selected to
become a Global Teacher and was placed in Masindi Islamic Primary School in
Uganda. She told us of the work being
done there and the need for teachers to receive training .The teachers were
more than willing to be guided in good practice in education. Di returned to
Uganda during the summers of 2004, 2005 and 2006 where she, along with two
colleagues, Lynne Pritchard and Ronnie Katzler, were trainers for teachers in
the Masindi District. As a result of their experiences in Uganda, Di, Lynne and
Ronnie have set up REDEARTH which received charitable status last year. REDEARTH aims to develop and support good
practice in teaching and learning in Uganda.
It is expected that ultimately the project will proceed and expand
without the involvement of Di, Lynne & Ronnie. Meanwhile they are committed to raising £50,000 to build a centre
that will provide an ICT facility for teachers with internet access, a 30 place
nursery, and a training facility for Masindi teachers with a resource centre. The
Rotary Club of Knighton & District were pleased to donate £50 towards this
project.

Supporting our Local Hospice Our fund-raising just before Christmas has
enabled us to support local charities.
On Wednesday, 27th February we welcomed Annie Ransome to
our meeting at The Knighton Hotel.
Annie works for St Michael’s Hospice at Bartestree. She was delighted to accept a cheque
for £350 from The Rotary Club of Knighton & District. St Michael’s Hospice receives only 17%
of the funds required to keep the hospice open. The other 83% has to be raised from the public so donations
like our’s are very gratefully received.
Welcome to Gill and
We were delighted to receive
Gill Warrington and Ian Graves into the Rotary Club of Knighton &
District. They were pinned at our
meeting on Wednesday evening, February 27th. at the Knighton Hotel.

Ian was introduced by Paul
Barrett. Ian was a teacher for 34
years. He retired(ish) to Bucknell from
Bristol. He is not new to Rotary having
been a member previously of both Teeside and Northallerton clubs. In 1998-99 he was President of
Northallerton. He is currently studying
for a Doctorate at Birmingham University.
He also conducts household energy surveys. His hobbies include motor-homing, cycling, the arts and music.
Ian is obviously a man of many talents, much energy and valuable experience –
all of which are welcome traits in a Rotarian.
Gill was
introduced by David Barwick. Gill was born
in Heanor, Derbyshire, the daughter of a pharmacist/optician and a Great Ormond St nurse. She was educated privately, went to
Nottingham College of Education, where she spent three years studying biology
with Neil. Neil and Gill celebrated
(Gill's words) their Ruby anniversary last year. Gill taught biology &
General Science for a number of years until 2 daughters appeared when Gill
became a full-time Mum.
Over the years, Gill has
done a number of interesting jobs including working in the labs at Intervet,
making & selling jewellery and managing a small family book shop in St Ives.
Gill
is also Ladies Captain at the Flat Green Bowls , a member of Knighton WI. and Sacristan
for St. Edward's Church, Knighton. Gill enjoys: foreign parts, gardening, walking,
reading, puzzles, crosswords and quizzes
