Club
The Club was officially chartered on the 27th September 1976, and the formal presentation of the charter was made at a dinner on the 13th October 1976. It was a great day for Knighton in that there was a very strong representation of Rotary Clubs from all over South and Mid Wales. One had the impression that it was the first time Knighton had entertained so many representatives from the Principality. But before that great day much had happened as the initiative for the formation of a Rotary Club in the town, came not from an adjacent club, but from a non Rotarian in the town. However that non Rotarian had been a member of the Rotary Club of Cupar in Scotland for four years, and the Rotary Club of Ludlow for one year. Work commitments and travel however meant regular attendances had become impossible and resignation was inevitable. In 1974 the then non Rotarian believed that there was a need for a Rotary Club in Knighton, and took it upon himself to take the appropriate action. The original response by RIBI was casual to say the least, and some serious dismay was recorded in the club records before formal permission was given. The Ex Rotarian then circulated about 40 potential members in the town and surrounds, and called an introductory meeting at a local Hotel. Here the assistance of a District Extension officer must be recognised and applauded. He was Jack Cross a man with great enthusiasm and commitment. The Ex Rotarian and Jack worked well together and in due course a formal Inaugural Meeting was held on 18th June 1976, when the Officers and Council of the Interim Club were elected, and the Rotary Club of Llandrindod formally became the Mother Club. At the great Charter Night in October 1976 there were 25 Rotarians, and of those 25 the following six are still active members of the club:- Geoff Hall, Reg Hill, Brian Morgan, Don Richards, Roy Williams, and Richard Morgan who organised the formation of the Club, and was our founder President for our first two years.
